Bocas del Toro Region

Panama's Ecological Sanctuary

Bocas del Toro is the capital of the Panamanian province of Bocas del Toro. It is located on an island in the Bocas del Toro Archipelago in the Caribbean Sea off of the northwest coast of Panama. Up until recently, the region remained undiscovered for most international travelers. Because of this, much of the island chain remains in pristine and untouched beauty. Bocas del Toro is a diver and outdoor lovers paradise with vibrant coral reefs, fishing, boating, kayaking, snorkeling and sandy beaches.

Traveling to Bocas, as the locals call it, can either be as simple as taking a 55 minute flight from Panama City or as adventurous as going over land by bus and water taxi. Either way it is a destination unlike any to be found elsewhere in Panama.

The people of the province are made up of mainly indigenous tribes, many of which still live in small isolated villages scattered throughout the islands. Add to this a healthy mix of people originally from Jamaica and other Caribbean islands, and you have an atmosphere that is more closely aligned to the islands of the Caribbean. The pace of life is slow and relaxed with nobody seeming to be in much of a hurry. Locals travel between the islands in dugout canoes, some with motors, some without. These canoes, or cayucos as they are called, dot the waterways and channels, especially in the morning when everybody is either going to the main island or the mainland. During this "rush" hour, most adults are traveling to the mainland to work in the banana fields and the children are going to the schools on Isla Colon.

It’s always a great time to visit Hacienda del Toro Caribbean Guest Ranch, Bed & Breakfast.

All seasons and all times of the year offer something different for our visitors. Turtle watching is in the months of June through August, depending on where you will be watching the turtles. We can arrange guides. Other times of the year provides world class surf breaks, at various locations in the archipelago. Again, surf lessons and tours can be arranged.

Notable festivals are the Feria del Mar (Ferry of the Sea) in September. The month of November offers a feast for the senses with parades, marching bands, school and provincial colors all in honor of the various dates in November that celebrate Panamanian and Bocaterno independence.
Always available, year round is Hacienda del Toro hospitality, trail riding or lessons and the beautiful colors and diversity of the Caribbean sea and the Panamanian jungle.

Hacienda del Toro's office and dock are located on main street in Bocas Town, Bocas del Toro, Panama. Our launch leaves daily to the Isla.
